ASTM approves 7th annex to sustainable aviation fuel specification D7566

Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.

The latest version of the standard ASTM D7566, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) specification, adds a seventh annex approving a new pathway for the production of SAF.
ASTM D7566 - 20 (updated May 5, 2020) - Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons.

The specification D7566 covers the manufacture of aviation turbine fuel that consists of conventional and synthetic blending components. The Annex A7 represents the seventh approved pathway for the production of SAF:
- Annex A1: Fischer-Tropsch Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (FT SPK).
- Annex A2: Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA SPK).
- Annex A3: Synthesized Iso-Paraffinic (SIP).
- Annex A4: Synthesized Paraffinic Kerosene plus Aromatics (SPK/A),
- Annex A5: Alcohol-To-Jet (ATJ).
- Annex A6: Catalytic Hydrothermolysis Jet (CHJ).
- Annex A7: Hydrocarbon-Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HC-HEFA SPK).

Annex A7 establishes criteria for the production and use of a specific type of synthesized paraffinic kerosene from hydroprocessed hydrocarbons, esters and fatty acids (HC-HEFA-SPK). The standard provides that HC-HEFA-SPK fuel, which was developed by IHI Corporation, may be blended at up to 10% by volume with conventional jet fuel. This fuel pathway was the first to receive expedited review under ASTM’s “fast track” review process (D4054 Fast Track Annex) and benefitted from guidance from a special clearinghouse established by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to help guide SAF producers through the rigorous assessment and approval process.
