KLM, SkyNRG and SHV to build the first European dedicated biorefinery for sustainable aviation fuel

Image
Type of post: NEWS. The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is one of the main mechanisms (in addition to fleet renewal and operational efficiency gains) to reduce CO 2 emissions in the aeronautical industry in the short term. However, not enough sustainable kerosene is currently being produced. With this in view, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines , SkyNRG and SHV Energy have just announced the construction of the first European dedicated biorefinery for SAF.  The facility will be a new  HVO biorefinery .

GENIALG project – Seaweed biorefineries to manufacture everyday products

Image
Type of post: Project profile. Asia has a commanding position in supply of seaweed biomass from aquaculture. In 2015, more than 99% of the production came from this continent, with China contributing 13,9 Mtons over the total amount of 29,4 Mtons (FAO, 2007).  Seaweed (also known as macroalgae) has long been recognised as a valuable source of diverse bioactive compounds which has great potential to be used in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and functional foods. However, until now, seaweed has been underexploited in Europe due to the challenges of expanding seaweed biomass production. Last week, the Biorenewables Development Centre (BDC) issued a Case Study about an initiative to boost the European Blue Economy by designing high-yielding seaweed cultivation systems: GENIALG . Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, it is the first industry-driven project bringing together pioneering companies in large-scale integrated European biorefineries and exp

EIP-AGRI issues the final report of a Workshop on Circular Bioeconomy

Type of post: FLASH NEWS. Last February, the European Commission Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development and the EIP-AGRI Service Point organized a workshop on “Opportunities for farm diversification in the circular bio-economy” in Vilnius (hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania). The event forms part of a continuing exploration of the opportunities available to farmers and foresters through the circular bioeconomy and how these opportunities might best be captured. The aim was to identify, share knowledge of and promote a set of promising co-operation mechanisms and business models for the circular bioeconomy, allowing for diversification of economic activities in rural areas, increasing farm income, minimising risk and enabling a healthier environment. Recently, a report has been issued summarising the findings: EIP-AGRI Workshop - Opportunities for farm diversification in the circular bio-economy .   Figure 1. Cover of the
