Pyrocell holds the groundbreaking ceremony marking construction start of Sweden's first biofuels pyrolysis plant
Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.
Pyrocell AB has held a groundbreaking ceremony marking
construction start of Sweden's first pyrolysis plant to convert sawmill
residues into a biocrude for advanced biofuels production.

ceremony held on March 23, 2020 (courtesy of Setra Group). Due to COVID-19
restrictions, the event was officiated by a handful of people: Katarina Levin (CEO
at Setra Group), Pontus Friberg (Chairman of the Board of Pyrocell) and Jonas
Jadling (Plant manager of Setra Kastet Sawmill).
Setra (wood products company) and Preem (fuel company) are teaming
up to produce pyrolysis oil from sawdust. The jointly owned company Pyrocell
will manufacture raw material for the production of biofuels in a plant
alongside Setra’s Kastet sawmill in Gävle. Pyrocell
selected the Dutch companies TechnipFMC and BTG BioLiquids (BTG-BTL) to design
and build the plant. Scheduled to begin production at late 2021, the biorefinery
will convert roughly 35,000 – 40,000 tons of dry wood residues into around 25,000
tonnes of bio-oil each year using proprietary fast pyrolysis technology
developed by BTG-BTL.
Pyrocell is an important link in
the value chain for renewable fuel. Setra has the raw material (sawdust) while
Preem has refineries and fuel stations. The sawdust will be processed into a
renewable raw material for biofuels at Pyrocell’s pyrolysis plant, ready for
further processing at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil.
