BTG-BTL and TechnipFMC to build a pyrolysis plant in Sweden for Pyrocell
Type of post: NEWS.
BTG-BTL and TechnipFMC will design and build a
production facility in Sweden where wood residues will be converted into
bio-oil that will be further processed in a refinery.

The Swedish joint venture Pyrocell (consisting
of the wood industry company Setra and the oil company Preem) is the promotor. In
June 2018, Setra and Preem announced that they were investigating the
possibility of building a facility for the production of 25,000 tons of
pyrolysis oil.

and Setra collaborate on renewable fuel”, 21/6/2018.

Setra in Sweden on which the new plant is going to be built (taken from the
press release)
Location
|
Grounds
right next to the Kastet sawmill of Setra in Gävle, about 170 kilometres
north of Stockholm.
|
Feedstock
and processing capacity
|
35,000 –
40,000 tons of dry wood residues (“non-fossil, non-food”).
The feedstock
in the form of sawdust is already available in the sawmill, eliminating the
need for further transport.
|
Product
and production capacity
|
25,000
tons of pyrolysis oil.
The oil will
be processed in Preem refinery in Lysekil (Swedish west coast) and will be
mixed with other types of fuel (biofuels as well as fossil fuels) resulting
in a petrol and diesel partly coming from sustainable oil.

Subcontractor
of the core units
|
Zeton, which
like BTG-BTL is based in Enschede, will manufacture the core units of the
pyrolysis plants, providing 100 full-time jobs in the Netherlands.
|
Timeline
|
Beginning
of the construction works: 2019.
Commissioning:
2021.
|
BTG-BTL and TechnipFMC have recently been
awarded an order for building one similar production facility in Finland, with
the possibility of extending to four. In that case, sawdust is converted into
pyrolysis oil, which is then used to provide energy for various factories in
Finland and the Netherlands.
