Gevo receives grant from the Queensland Waste to Biofutures Fund for a sustainable aviation fuel project
Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.
Gevo, Inc. has
been awarded 159,000 Australian dollars of the Queensland
Waste to Biofutures (W2B) Fund to support the assessment of a 2G feedstock
to biofuel project in Queensland (Australia). The W2B Fund provides 5 million Australian
dollars to boost the development of waste to biofutures projects in Queensland.

Figure 1. Gevo supplied the renewable fuel
used in Virgin Australia’s trial of sustainable aviation fuel at Brisbane
Airport which was completed in June last year. Gevo’s participation in the
successful SAF trial at the Brisbane Airport led to Queensland being considered
as the location for the company’s first biorefinery outside of the United
States.
This new research project will see Gevo
collaborate with Queensland University of
Technology (QUT) to turn sugar cane waste and wood waste into sustainable aviation
fuel (SAF). This opportunity opens the door for the development of a project
that not only supplies low carbon gasoline to Queensland, but also the
possibility to supply commercial quantities of 2G SAF to the Brisbane Airport. For
this project, Gevo is evaluating the most likely 2G biomass to carbohydrate
conversion process to use in conjunction with its proven carbohydrate to low
carbon biofuel process.
