The Croatian Oil & Gas Company
INA-Industrija nafte d.d. Zagreb (INA) has
awarded Axens a license agreement to
supply Futurol™ cellulosic ethanol technology and a contract for basic
engineering design of an advanced bioethanol production plant in Sisak (Croatia).
Press release: “INA selects Futurol licensed by
Axens for its project of advanced bioethanol production in Croatia”, 9/3/2020.

Last January, DSEC
announced the signature of a basic engineering contract with INA, covering
the OSBL portion of the plant to be built in Sisak. Now, new details of the
project have been unveiled in the press release of Axens. Futurol™ technology will
enable INA to produce 55,000 tons per year (equivalent to 70 million liters) of
advanced ethanol in synergy with green energy production. The facility will be
fed with lignocellulosic feedstocks such as agricultural residues and the energy
crop Miscanthus.
The Futurol™ Technology
Commercialised by Axens, the Futurol technology
converts biomass from agricultural and forest residues into cellulosic bioethanol
through enzymatic conversion and fermentation. This technology combines several
integrated stages, including the onsite enzymes production.
Futurol has been developed since 2008 by a
consortium of eleven partners, including R&D, industrial and financial
actors, whose expertise cover the whole production chain, from the biomass
resources to the bioethanol: ARD, IFP
Energies nouvelles, INRA, Lesaffre, Office national des forêts, Tereos, Total,
Vivescia, Crédit Agricole Nord Est Participations, CGB, Unigrains.
A pilot plant located in Pomacle-Bazancourt (Procethol-2G)
and a commercial scale pretreatment unit implemented in the Tereos facility in
Bucy-Le-Long allowed validating the different stages of the technology. ARD
acquired Procethol-2G on November 1, 2018.
