Highlights 2020 – Advanced biorefinery projects – Cellulosic ethanol production

Type of post: YEARLY HIGHLIGHTS.

Anhui Guozhen Group (Anhui Guozhen), Chemtex Chemical Engineering (Chemtex) and Clariant signed a license agreement on sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol technology. Anhui Guozhen and Chemtex agreed to form a joint venture to realize a full-scale commercial biorefinery for the production of cellulosic ethanol in Anhui province with Clariant’s technology. It was the first license deal for sunliquid in China and the third overall.

Versalis (Eni’s chemical company) announced that all the plants at Crescentino (Vercelli, Piedmont) will be up and running by the first half of 2020. The biorefinery, acquired in November 2018, is designed for industrial-scale production of bioethanol and has been upgraded with an investment of more than 15 M€.

The Croatian Oil & Gas Company INA-Industrija nafte d.d. Zagreb (INA) awarded Axens a license agreement to supply Futurol™ cellulosic ethanol technology and a contract for basic engineering design of an advanced bioethanol production plant in Sisak (Croatia).

Clariant and Eta Bio announced that a license agreement for the sunliquid® technology has been signed. Eta Bio intends to build a full-scale commercial plant for the production of cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues at a site in Northeast Bulgaria.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), Indian oil & gas company based in Mangalore, is planning to build a second generation (2G) ethanol facility in the State of Karnataka (India). A local distributed model will integrate the gas fermentation technology of LanzaTech with the gasification technology from Ankur Scientific.

Enerkem announced the construction of a biofuel plant in Varennes with a group of strategic partners (including Hydro-Québec, Proman, Shell and Suncor) and with the support of the Québec and Canadian governments. The plant will leverage green hydrogen and oxygen produced through electrolysis (87-megawatt electrolyzer), transforming Quebec’s excess hydroelectricity capacity into value-added biofuels and renewable chemicals.

The first delivery of advanced ethanol marked the start of the long-term cooperation between OMV and AustroCel Hallein GmbH. Austria’s first plant for the production of 2G bioethanol is now up and running in Hallein.
