Highlights 2020 – Advanced biorefinery projects – HVO production

Phillips 66 and Renewable Energy Group, Inc. (REG) announced that they were discontinuing their joint effort to construct a large-scale renewable diesel plant in Ferndale (Washington, USA). 

Global Clean Energy Holdings, Inc. (GCEH) announced the acquisition of the Alon Bakersfield refinery. GCEH immediately commenced refurbishing the refinery to produce renewable diesel from organic feedstocks such as vegetable oils. 

Phillips 66 announced that it plans to reconfigure its San Francisco Refinery in Rodeo (California) to produce renewable fuels. The plant would no longer produce fuels from crude oil, but instead would make fuels from used cooking oil, fats, greases and soybean oils. With 800 Mgal/year (around 2.5 Mtons/year), it will be the world’s largest facility of its kind. 

Within the framework of the “net zero” strategy, Total will convert its Grandpuits refinery (Seine-et-Marne, France) into a zero-crude platform. By 2024, following an investment totalling more than 500 M€, the platform will focus on the production of advanced biofuels and bioplastics. 

Honeywell announced that PT Pertamina (Persero) will use Honeywell UOP technologies to produce advanced biofuels at its Plaju and Cilacap refineries in Indonesia. The company will use UOP Renewable Jet Fuel Process™ technology to open a greenfield biorefinery at Plaju in Palembang (South Sumatra) and UOP Ecofining™ technology to revamp its Cilacap refinery (Central Java). 

Renewable Energy Group, Inc. (REG) announced its plans to undertake a capacity expansion of its Geismar (Louisiana, USA) HVO biorefinery from 90 Mgal per year to 340 Mgal per year. 

Repsol will build the first low-emissions advanced biofuels plant (HVO biorefinery) in Spain at its refinery in Cartagena. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 250 ktons of renewable diesel, biojet, bionaphtha, and biopropane. The plant, projected to be operational in 2023, will produce advanced biofuels from recycled raw materials to be used in aircraft, trucks or cars. The new advanced biofuels will make it possible to cut CO2 emissions by 900,000 tons per year. This pioneering facility will represent an investment of 188 M€.
