AustroCel (Austrian company focused on producing high purity cellulose for the textile industry) has invested around 42 M€ in the new ethanol plant on its site in Hallein and created ten new jobs. The Hallein ethanol plant has an annual capacity of up to 35 Ml, making it the world’s largest bioethanol plant based on wood. Ethanol from Hallein is extracted from the wood sugars left over in cellulose production before being fermented and distilled.

The plant will operate at full capacity in January 2021, when regular deliveries of bioethanol to OMV begin. In the first year, AustroCel will supply more than 1.5 million liters per month of 2G ethanol to OMV. This product will help reduce the carbon intensity of the OMV product portfolio and aid in meeting its 2025 Sustainability Targets.
