ANA and LanzaTech sign agreement for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel

Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.

All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan's largest airline (on the basis of fleet size), has signed an offtake agreement with LanzaTech that will allow it to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a significant step in ANA's efforts to minimize its environmental impact. By working with LanzaTech to implement SAF, ANA hopes to enhance the quality of fuel used in its aircraft while also meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its efforts to become the most eco-friendly airline group in the world.

ANA signed a partnership agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd., which strategically invested in LanzaTech, in 2018, to jointly develop a SAF manufacturing business that utilizes LanzaTech's catalytic technology. Working with Mitsui & Co., Ltd, ANA plans to implement these breakthroughs by testing this fuel made from industrial waste emissions this fall. The current agreement targets 2021 for the final delivery of the SAF.

LanzaTech’s gas fermentation process valorizes waste carbon-rich gases to obtain ethanol which is upgraded to an alcohol-to-jet synthetic paraffinic kerosene (ATJ-SPK) through a catalytic process and a proprietary catalyst developed by PNNL. The catalyst removes oxygen from the ethanol in the form of water, and then combines the remaining hydrocarbon molecules to create chains large enough for producing jet fuel without aromatics.
