The Government of Quebec financially supports BELT to demonstrate the production of biofuels from residual forest biomass

Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.

The Government of Quebec, within the framework of the Technoclimat program, has awarded 5,943,000 CA$ to Bioenergy La Tuque (BELT) to demonstrate the pre-commercial potential of producing biofuels from residual forest biomass.

Technoclimat is an energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction innovation support program which offers financial support to project promoters who intend to demonstrate the potential of their technological innovations. The first call for projects of the specific part of the production of bioenergy was launched on February 19 to support pre-commercial innovations.

BELT is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 with the objective of putting in place all the conditions to the construction of a forest-based biorefinery for the production of renewable fuels in La Tuque (Quebec, Canada). In this demonstration project, two different technologies will be tested and the results obtained will make it possible to target the best processes and equipment for the production of biofuels on a commercial scale. BELT works in concert with the Atikamek Nation (indigenous inhabitants of the subnational country or territory called Nitaskinan, in the upper Saint-Maurice River valley of Quebec) as well as with the Finish Neste. The construction of a commercial production plant following the demonstration stage would be the very first project of its kind in Canada and would generate significant socioeconomic and environmental benefits for Quebec.
