This investment, continuation of a previous fund granted after a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) selection process, is being negotiated with LanzaTech. The Energy Department released the Project Development for Pilot and Demonstration Scale Manufacturing of Biofuels, Bioproducts, and Biopower (PD2B3) FOA in 2015 and selected six projects in 2016 to plan and design integrated biorefineries (2 at demo-scale and 4 at pilot-scale). The project leaded by LanzaTech received 4 M$.

In their original proposal, LanzaTech brought together a large team to design, construct and operate an integrated demonstration-scale biorefinery to use industrial waste gases and other gas sources to produce up to 3 million gallons per year of low-carbon jet and diesel fuels. LanzaTech and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have already proven the viability of this renewable jet fuel production technology.
