Chhattisgarh, state located in the centre-east of the country is known as the “rice bowl of India”. Rice straw and paddy husk are sources of cellulose-rich biomass and there is great interest in converting them into ethanol. The stubble burning is a serious problem in the area. If the famers know that the agricultural waste will be bought to feed the ethanol plants, they will not burn it. Apart from being a solution for the most immediate problem of stubble burning, there could be long-term positive impacts derived from the use of ethanol as fuel.
