EERA Bioenergy Joint Programme launches its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.

Researchers from 36 organizations in 18 countries, grouped within the framework of the Bioenergy Joint Program of the European Alliance for Energy Research (EERA), have published their Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda. As highlighted by a press release provided by the Technical Secretariat of EERA Bioenergy, this agenda defines priorities and perspectives by 2030, with the aim of joining the efforts in research, development and innovation in bioenergy of the different Member States and achieving the enormous potential of biomass-based solutions contribute substantially to the energy transition.

The agenda evinces the consensus reached by researchers on how to deal with the challenges that decarbonisation policies address from a research and innovation perspective and through solutions based on the valorisation of biomass. The general objective is to accelerate the implementation of SET-Plan priorities and actions to help reduce carbon emissions in the energy sector and promote the bioeconomy. In these areas, bioenergy is an essential component of the renewable technologies mix for all possible scenarios of climate change mitigation.

The agenda contributes to:
- Align the priorities and research activities of all the organizations that participate in EERA Bioenergy and, therefore, of the main European actors in this field, to create a solid scientific-technical base that allows a greater development of the advanced routes of bioenergy;
- Align research priorities and activities with the other agents involved, promoting international cooperation;
- Evaluate research and innovation priorities to accelerate the advancement of bioenergy and the circular bioeconomy in Europe;
- Promote the possibilities of joint technological development, in order to help accelerate the implementation of the objectives of the SET-Plan;
- Create a common space for other researchers and stakeholders in the industry to connect with the researchers of EERA Bioenergy. This will make it possible to further align priorities and establish beneficial collaborations.
