Ginkgo Bioworks and Sumitomo Chemical have announced a R&D collaboration program to develop more sustainable biobased chemicals for multiple industries.

Sumitomo Chemical seeks to leverage Ginkgo's long-established expertise in organism engineering to significantly increase the production efficiency and sustainability of a key biobased commercial products. Sumitomo Chemical was founded around a mission to drive societal impact and solve environmental challenges through technology, and the company has chosen to leverage Ginkgo's extensive cell programming platform and biological codebase to explore next generation solutions as Sumitomo Chemical looks to utilize more bio-based production methods.

Shell to build an HVO biorefinery in Rotterdam

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) has announced a final investment decision to build a biofuels facility with a capacity of 820 ktons/year at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam (the Netherlands) formerly known as the Pernis refinery. Once built, the facility will be among the biggest in Europe to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel made from waste. Press release: “ Shell to build one of Europe’s biggest biofuels facilities ”, 16/09/2021. Figure 1. Pernis refinery Advanced production methods will be used to make the fuels. The facility is expected to use technology to capture carbon emissions from the manufacturing process and store them in an empty gas field beneath the North Sea through the Porthos project. La UE lidera la producción de remolacha azucarera con cerca del 50% del total. La mayor parte de ella se procesa para obtener azúcar líquido o cristalizado que posteriormente se utiliza en aplicaciones alimentarias. Sólo el 2% del total de la producción de azúcar se usa en aplicaciones no relacionadas con la alimentación (por ejemplo, la producción de bioetanol en biorrefinerías convencionales de azúcar). El sector azucarero necesita desarrollar nuevos mercados para crecer.
