Cargill is constructing a groundbreaking plant in Belgium to produce biodiesel from wastes

Cargill is constructing a new biodiesel plant in Belgium. The new facility will be capable of processing challenging feedstocks, including acid oils from vegetable oil refining, liquid residues from industrial processes and even the fat recovered from sewage sludge from local municipalities.

Location

Existing integrated oilseeds crush and Bioro biodiesel site in Ghent (Belgium).

Investment

150 M€.

Feedstocks

All types of liquid waste oils and fats, including by-products from food processing, and waste from the food industry and non-food crops grown on marginal land.

Product and production capacity

115,000 metric tons of biodiesel per year.

Technology provider

BDI-BioEnergy International GmbH

Employment effect

The new facility will create around 20 new direct jobs and an additional 60 indirect jobs in the Ghent community.

Timeline

Construction will commence in October 2020, with the plant due to open in June 2022.
