Sustane to set-up a plastic-to-fuel pyrolysis plant in Nova Scotia
Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.
Sustane
Technologies Inc. (Sustane) is a cleantech company focused on waste
transformation that has developed a set of disruptive processes to transform
municipal solid waste (MSW) streams into high value fuels and recyclable
materials.
This Canadian firm is building a plant designed
to transform up to 70,000 tons per year of MSW into 35,000 tons of biomass
pellets, 3.5 million litres of diesel fuel and recyclable metals. The project
was launched in September 2016 with an agreement between Sustane and the
District of the Municipality of Chester (Nova Scotia, Canada) to divert the
landfill destined MSW to the new facility and broke ground in March 2017. It is
located 20 km north of Chester in Lunenburg County.

Sustane has already received permits for the
overall project but was required to submit an environmental study for the
pyrolysis plant, the part of the complex that will produce fuel from plastic. Approximately
12-15 tons of the waste-derived plastics is expected to be converted to
synthetic fuel per day using the pyrolysis technology. The study was submitted
on July 4 (Notice
of Registration) and, on or before August 23, the Minister of Environment
will decide if the project can be granted conditional environmental assessment
approval. The construction and commissioning of the plant is planned for this
fall.
The plant would be able to process film plastics, which include shopping bags and plastic wrap. Since China stopped accepting those wastes, Halifax and other jurisdictions have grappled with how to dispose of them.
