IndianOil and LanzaTech open a pilot plant to convert carbon dioxide to high-value lipids

Type of post: FLASH NEWS.

- Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC) has just inaugurated a pilot plant to convert carbon dioxide to high-value lipids at the firm’s R&D centre (DBT-IOC) in Faridabad (India). This technology is expected to create a platform that can produce sustainable food and fuels economically and at commercial scale.
- The pilot facility uses proprietary technologies owned by IOC and LanzaTech. It is a 100 litre plant which will capture around 10 kg of carbon dioxide daily. LanzaTech, using its anaerobic gas fermentation process, will convert carbon dioxide to acetic acid. IOC, through its aerobic fermentation process, will transform the acetic acid into lipids (omega-3 fatty acid and other lipids for use in biofuels applications).
- In the same event, IOC also laid the foundation stone for a five ton biomethanation plant being constructed at the same R&D facility.
