Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels calls upon EU institutions to set an advanced biofuels mandate in 2021

Type of post: NEWS IN BRIEF.

Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels (LSB) is a coalition of 12 leading sustainable advanced biofuels producers and technology developers (members: Biochemtex, BTG, Clariant, Orsted, UPM, St1, Energochemica, Enerkem, Kaidi, Neot, Global Bioenergies, Sekab) committed to making a significant contribution to meeting EU ambitions of decarbonizing the transport sector. They believe that 2nd Generation and Advanced Biofuels (2GAB) made from non-food competing feedstocks represent one of the major industrial opportunities today for our planet in the sustainable energy technology field.

In a recent press release, they are calling upon the EU institutions to set an advanced biofuels mandate, based on Annex IX part A of the Directive 2015/1513, to begin in 2021. A binding target would set a strong framework for investments in sustainable, novel and innovative technologies and production facilities. The Commission and the Parliament are aligned with the policy request but Council is proposing that the mandate only kicks off in 2025. According to LSB, this delay would create significant political insecurity. They consider that this kind of uncertainty has been the main reason for the lack of investments in the last few years.

Also, the press release exposes other key policy requests from the advance biofuels industry and offers the knowledge, experience and ideas of LSB to ensure a future policy that will promote sustainability, provide incentives for investments and enable the growth of European industry.
