Agreement between Technip and BTG BioLiquids to design and build fast pyrolysis plants

BTG BioLiquids B.V. (BTL) is a biomass technology provider founded in 2007 and based in The Netherlands. The company is focused on the fast pyrolysis process. BTL has developed a technology originally invented at the University of Twente and demonstrated it by building and operating a commercial scale biorefinery. The plant was opened in Hengelo (The Netherlands) in May 2015 (click here to learn more about the process and the EMPYRO project).

The experience in the design and commercial operation of this plant is one of the key points of the exclusive cooperation agreement that have just signed BTL with Technip to design and build fast pyrolysis plants (see press release). Technip will provide EPC services for the modular facilities based on BTL’s technology. Below, an interesting video about the construction of the fast pyrolysis plant EMPYRO by using the modular building approach can be watched.

Technip and BTL will also collaborate in the development of commercial uses for pyrolysis oil as renewable fuel and chemicals feedstock. The agreement will be managed by Technip’s operating center in Zoetermeer (The Netherlands) which has significant EPC experience and is part of Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology, which looks after Technip’s expanding portfolio of onshore process technologies in petrochemicals, refining, hydrogen and syngas, polymers and gas.

According to Gerhard Muggen (Managing Director of BTL) stated about the agreement: "The strong combination of Technip and BTL will now start to offer turnkey pyrolysis plants and services to industrial companies seeking to develop new biosourced applications and anticipate the transition to a biobased economy”.
