CBE JU concludes the evaluation of its first call for project proposals

The first CBE JU call invited project proposals across 12 different topics, with the objective to advance competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe, as well as develop new circular and sustainable products and solutions for the market. 125 proposals were submitted to this call, requesting more than 600 M€ in funding. Based on the evaluation results and available CBE JU budget, 21 of them have been selected for funding: two innovation actions - flagships, eight innovation actions, ten research & innovation actions and one coordination & support action. The successful applicants and the CBE JU Programme Office will now start preparing grant agreements to be signed by the end of May 2023 for a total amount of nearly 120 M€.

Cargill and HELM to build commercial-scale biobased BDO plant in USA using Genomatica’s technology

As part of the agreement, both companies are investing a combined 300 M$ to build the first biobased BDO plant in USA. Qore has licensed Genomatica’s BDO process technology. Vertoro wins grant to build a lignin biorefinery in the Port of Rotterdam

Vertoro has announced that its “Goldilocks by sea” proposal won a REACT-EU grant (2 M€) to co-finance all engineering, permitting and ground works activities for a 250 ktons/year biorefinery in the Port of Rotterdam. Publication date: 15/06/2017 Last update: 24/01/2018 Introduction 1,2,3,4,5 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), also known as dehydromucic acid and pyromucic acid, is an organic compound that was first detected in human urine. In fact, a healthy human produces 3-5 mg/day. It is a very stable compound. Some of its physical properties, such as insolubility in most of common solvents and a very high melting point (it melts at 342 °C), seem to indicate intermolecular hydrogen bonding. FDCA has two carboxylic acid groups, which makes it a suitable monomer for polycondensation reactions with diols or diamines. It is one of the top 12 value-added biobased chemicals listed by the US DoE in 2004. The list was updated in 2010 and FDCA was included again, but this time in a group together with furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF).
