Official opening of the cellulosic ethanol biorefinery of Dupont in Iowa
DuPont will open its 30-million-gallon
cellulosic ethanol biorefinery in Nevada (Iowa, USA) on October 30. The
Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO)
Director, senior government officials, DuPont staff and local farmers will
attend the grand opening ceremony and plant tour. The biorefinery will be
fueled by corn stover biomass harvested from a 30-mile radius around the
facility. According to DuPont, the plant has provided many job and financial
opportunities for this rural area: 1,000 construction-related jobs, 85
permanent jobs at the plant, 500 local farmers to supply the corn stover and
150 people involved in collection, transportation and storage of seasonal
feedstock.
The completion of
this biorefinery is a key milestone in the emerging production of cellulosic
ethanol. In fact, it is the largest of the four commercial-scale plants (based
on enzymatic conversion pathways) currently in operation in the United States: ACE
Project (Iowa, 2 Mgal/y), Project Liberty (Iowa, 20 Mgal/y), Hugoton Biorefinery
(Kansas, 25 Mgal/y) and Nevada Biorefinery (Iowa, 30 Mgal/y). For more information,
