Succinity GmbH, a joint venture between BASF and Corbion Purac, is dedicated to the production and commercialisation of succinic acid. Both companies have been conducting research on biobased succinic acid under a joint development agreement since 2009, before registering Succinity GmbH in August 2013. The company is owner of a plant in Montmeló (Spain) that was constructed by modifying an existing fermentation facility at the Corbion Purac site. The biorefinery has an annual capacity of 10,000 metric tons and produces commercial quantities of biobased succinic acid.

The proprietary fermentation technology is based on the bacterium “Basfia succiniciproducens” and can work with different renewable feedstocks (glycerol, sugars,…). The gypsum-free downstream purification process allows for a closed cycle and efficient production without major waste streams.
